Chen Wenwei is a lens-based artist and visual designer based in Toronto whose practice examines how space is perceived, inhabited, and granted authority. Working through photography as a speculative and investigative language, she explores the conditions through which spatial experience becomes legible, and how visibility is shaped by distance, duration, bodily engagement, and attention. Her work is grounded in an observer-dependent understanding of space, in which what is seen and recognized is not simply given, but formed through encounters among body, site, and perception.
Born in China and educated across Australia and Canada, Chen holds an Honours BDes from the University of New South Wales and an MDes from OCAD University’s Interdisciplinary Art, Media and Design program. Influenced by the phenomenological thinking articulated in Juhani Pallasmaa’s The Eyes of the Skin, she approaches photography not as a means of immediate capture, but as a method of measurement, construction, and perceptual inquiry. Brutalist architecture occupies a central position in her practice, functioning as both material subject and conceptual ground through which she investigates thresholds of visibility, resistance, and spatial judgment.
Chen has exhibited internationally across Asia, Australia, North America and Europe. Selected presentations include RBSA Gallery, Birmingham; Photofair Shanghai; Moordn Art Fair, Guangzhou; the Powerhouse Museum of Sydney; and OCAD University’s Graduate Gallery, Toronto. Her work has been featured by Art Gallery of Ontario, Sydney Contemporary, and Carriageworks. She is currently under commercial representation by Art On Space Gallery and Galerie Vesper.
